To tofu or not to tofu?

In a time when prices are rising and we are constantly trying to find ways to save, have you ever thought of going meat free one night of the week? The 'Meat Free Monday' trend is getting quite popular, especially as it is led by Paul McCartney, however their environmental reasons for not eating meat do not mean that we too cannot jump on the bandwagon with the reasoning to save money right?!

So how do you cook interesting and delicious food without using meat, and still please the whole family? Well tofu certainly has come a long way from an alien food that we would never dare try cooking unless we were inspired by a Japanese MasterChef challenge one night. And then it might be so difficult that we are put off from ever using it again.

But tofu comes in many user friendly forms these days. Marinated firm tofu is flavoured and ready to add to stir frys or curries and is an easy replacement for meat. And would you believe there are even tofu steaks?!

So in trying to expand my use of tofu, I decided to cook up some silken tofu for dinner the other night. This is best known as the kind you would find in Japanese soups like a miso soup. Instead though, I opted to try and fry the tofu.

Fried Tofu
Ingredients
250g pack silken tofu
1 tbs black pepper
1 tbs salt
1 tsp cayenne pepper
4 tbs plain flour (I used GF to make this a GF recipe)
Vegetable oil

Method
Cut the tofu into 1cm x 1cm x 2cm pieces. Press out any moisture on paper towel and set aside.
Mix together the pepper, salt and cayenne pepper in a mortar and pestle until crushed and combined. Mix in the flour and then pour mixture onto a plate. Cover the base of a frying pan with oil (about 1/2cm deep) and heat. The oil is hot enough when a bit of flour bubbles straight away.

Coat the tofu pieces in the flour mixture and then fry in the oil, turning until golden brown on each side.  Drain on paper towel.

This made a delicious stir fry with broccoli, capsicum, carrot and onion.

For the veggies, use whatever you have available, like a mix of asian greens or some carrots, broccoli and capsicum. Add some soy sauce with a dash of fish sauce and you have a fantastic tasty non-meat meal!

PS I have even used tofu in this form in rice paper rolls and they were delicious!

  1. I love tofu. Meat eaters give it a bad wrap, but I can't see how anybody can really hate it.
